Thing a day, day twenty eight

The last official Thing a day! What great fun it was!

The last TAD is something for my daughter. I figured it was about time I made something for her since none of the TADs were for her at all! Poor thing! She did enjoy seeing (and playing with some of) the TADs.

Earlier this month we changed her crib to a toddler bed. There was some falling out in the beginning so then we put some pillows on the floor for her. Then we discovered that she would just stay sleeping on the floor! LOL. She had a little toddler pillow so we decided to upgrade her to a regular sized pillow. I had made a bunch of pillowcases for her little pillow and knew I needed to make some for the big pillow.

Since she is a big fan of the Madagascar movies and the Penguins of Madagascar show, I found this fabric on Etsy. I didn’t realize that it is pretty hard to find! I guess because the movie is old. Anyhow, since I never made a pillowcase this size, it was actually more difficult that I thought it would be (I am not good in math, I bring disgrace to my Asian background!) And of course I don’t write anything down so I am constantly repeating the measurements. It’s my own fault! But I do think it came out pretty cute!

I put it on my daughter’s bed and she promptly said she was going to take a nap. She loves it! I’m so glad! I am glad that I made my last TAD for her!

tad 2010-24 Double Sided

I think these are double-sided fabric yoyo pendants (I haven't added any attachments like pins or hooks, so what they will eventually be is TBD). one picture is the opposite side of the other)

A thought: last year I didn't know TAD was only one month long and was sorely disappointed when it ended. This year, I've been a little more prepared, but somehow it doesn't seem any less sad. If anything, I think I am just sadder a little sooner. Anyone else getting the blues about it?

(On the bright side, since I'd like to try ending on a positive note, i dished out a bit of that kimchi I made yesterday to my neighbors today and just got a thank-you-it-was-good-with-my-dinner-tonight email, so it must have been good!)

Thing a day, day nineteen

My nineteenth thing a day was a spontaneous project. Well, I don’t know if I should call it spontaneous as I had in mind to do this for awhile but I finally sprung into action on the 19th.

This past summer, while “vacationing” at Sesame Place, I was lucky enough to spend some fun shopping time a super big Joann’s fabrics (we don’t have one close to us). They had these cute kits on super sale (I swear, I think it was like $1.99) I bought like 4 of them. Each kit had different elements in it for applique and embroidery for baby/toddler clothes with iron on designs and sayings. I bought 2 girl design kits and 2 boy design kits. I used one of the kits to make my daughter a cupcake shirt and I haven’t touched them since (and there are lots of designs in them, you could probably make at least 10 items from each kit.)

So I finally got a chance to use one of the boy kits for a friend that had a baby in September. I haven’t seen her since the summer and hadn’t met the baby yet but the shirt I used was for 18-24 months anyway. We had a playdate with a bunch of other kids Friday afternoon so that morning I got to work. I think it came out cute! The last photo shows my chopping sewing job around the applique. I hadn’t meant to use a zig zag stitch but I forgot to change it back to a straight stitch from using it on my TAD 18 and then I was too lazy to take it out and start over. I don’t think the baby will care anyway. LOL.

Thing a day, day eighteen

Cupcakedishtoweltad18

The eighteenth day of TAD was a really quick project (aside from the pre-washing of the fabrics.)

I used my pinking sheers to cut out some cupcake fabric to sew onto a plain light brown dishtowel. I thought it came out pretty cute although I'm pretty sure I cut enough width of the fabric to cover the dishtowel but somehow it shifted so the sides get short changed a bit. I didn't want to obsess over it because I thought it came out cute anyway.

Thing a day, day twelve

I’m a little behind in my posts but here is TAD 12! I was inspired by all the snow we got earlier in the week and made this felt snowman with a pattern from Wild Olive’s blog. I added arms with black pipe cleaners. The first photo he is looking out the window at the snow. Not sure if he’s longing to be out there and glad he’s not out there in the cold! The second photo shows my daughter Sienna waiting to lunge at the snowman, she thought it was really cute. I already told her it wasn’t for her and that I was mailing it away in a swap!

I also finished the TAD from day nine, Emma’s messenger bag. I think it came out pretty cute! For the inside, I used a silver thread for the topstitching. I thought it would be harder to work with but it didn’t give me any troubles. Fun fun!

day 13: jersey a-line dress

today i sewed a dress:

i based it off a dress that i own and like, but it's made of a silky
material, whereas this one is made from 2 jersey materials. the top is
cut from a tshirt, the bottom is the same printed fabric i used the
other day for my haramaki project. i'll try to take a picture of me
wearing it tomorrow when there is daylight.

Thing a day, day eleven

Thing a day eleven! I made this Zakka cat pillow, pattern and tutorial from the Quilting Arts stitch magazine, fall 2009. I was actually able to finish most of it in one sitting! Woohoo!! My daughter helped me stuff it later in the afternoon and then I hand stitched it closed.

My dad was over at the house because of yesterday’s snow storm (he parked the car in the garage so he didn’t have to deal with digging it out which he would have to do if he parked on the street at his house) so he played with my daughter for most of the morning. So I was able to cut out the pattern pieces, cut out the fabric and sew away (I already had the hearts cut out with my sizzix from another project)! Honestly, it’s not that hard of a project anyway but definitely easier to finish when you don’t have an almost 3 year old to entertain!

I suck at sewing on curves but I’m pretty happy with the way the eyes and mouth turned out! The ear fabric and tail fabric both have some glitter on it that you can’t tell from the photos.

day 8: a couple of haramakis

in tad 2008, i made a haramaki, a japanese style belly warmer:
http://cignoh.blogspot.com/2008/02/20080229thingaday.html

i thought i would make more, but never did, but find that i wear the
one i made a lot. so, i made a couple more tonight:

one of them is made from the remaining tshirt material from my day 1
project (bob tshirt pillow), and the other is made from some fabric i
bought a while back but haven't done anything with. i normally leave
my tshirt creations unfinished so the hems roll up, but the orange
jersey fabric i bought is printed, and the back is lighter than the
front. i'll either leave it or add some kind of trim at some point.

day 5: egg custard pie dim sum doll

i haven't named my plush egg custard pie yet because i don't know how
to say it in mandarin, can anyone help me? but here she is:

i improvised a bit while making her, shortened her body attached the
crust in a different way than i had envisioned. i have other ideas
about how i might make another, perhaps it will be another 'thing'
this month. or not, who knows?
